Getting there and around
There is no station at Hawes, which is deliberately awkward and part of its character. Garsdale, on the Settle-Carlisle line, is six miles west, and the community-run Little White Bus meets most trains there for the short run into town; this is the best car-free approach and puts Leeds within about two and a half hours. The 856 bus runs east down the dale to Leyburn, Bedale and Northallerton a few times a day. By car, the Buttertubs Pass climbs north from Hawes to 1,726 feet, and the Fleet Moss road runs to Wharfedale.
When to go
Come between April and October, or come in winter with a plan that works if you are stuck. Hawes is high, exposed and west-facing, which you feel in February and appreciate in June. The Buttertubs Pass and the Fleet Moss road close in snow, sometimes for days, and January and February see a good number of businesses simply shut.
