Ingleton is a working base camp rather than a chocolate-box village. It sits where the River Twiss and the River Doe crash together under an old railway viaduct, with outdoor shops, cafés that open at 8am for cyclists, and Ingleborough — 723m and flat-topped — looming from the north-east. The Waterfalls Trail, the show caves and the community-run heated outdoor pool, open roughly May to September, are all within about 500 metres of the village centre. Evenings are quiet: Main Street empties, and there is no late supermarket, no taxi rank and no bus after early evening, which is exactly the point for anyone who wants dark sky and an early start on the Three Peaks.

Getting there and around

You will want a car. From Leeds it is about an hour and a half up the A65 from the M6 or via Skipton and Settle; from the M6, leave at junction 34 or 36. The nearest railway station is Bentham, four miles west on the Leeds–Lancaster line, with Clapham five miles east and Ribblehead twelve miles up the B6255 on the Settle–Carlisle. Buses to Settle, Kirkby Lonsdale and Lancaster run only a handful of times a day, finish early and thin out on Sundays outside the summer DalesBus season, so check the timetable before you plan around one. Inside the village everything is a five-minute walk.

When to go

A bright Saturday fills the village car park by 9.30, and the Waterfalls Trail is empty at 8am before the ticket hut has warmed up. The community-run outdoor pool is heated and open roughly May to September. Winter is a gamble on opening hours: several cafés and both cave attractions run reduced winter hours or close outright, and a wet Monday in February leaves the village quiet. October evenings empty Main Street by 9pm, with the Wheatsheaf serving a pint and probably food until around 8.30.
