Hawes has no station: Garsdale, on the Settle-Carlisle line, is six miles west and the community-run Little White Bus meets most trains there for the short run into town — this is the best car-free approach, and it puts Leeds within about two and a half hours. The 856 runs east down the dale to Leyburn, Bedale and Northallerton a few times a day. By road, the Buttertubs Pass climbs north from Hawes to 1,726 feet, and the Fleet Moss road runs to Wharfedale; both close in snow and ice, so check conditions between November and March.
When to go
Come between April and October, or come in winter with a plan that works if you are stuck. Hawes is high, exposed, west-facing country: the Buttertubs Pass and the Fleet Moss road to Wharfedale close in snow, sometimes for days, and January and February see a good number of businesses simply shut. You feel the altitude in February and appreciate it in June. Walkers arrive from spring onward on the Pennine Way.
