3-star hotels in Whitby
A shortlist of the 3-star hotels in and around Whitby, gathered for travellers who want a harbour town with an abbey on the cliff, cobbled yards underfoot and an easy walk to the water.
Staying in Whitby
Whitby is a working fishing harbour split by the River Esk, with a ruined Benedictine abbey on the cliff above and a swing bridge that stops all traffic when boats pass. The east side — Church Street, Grape Lane, Henrietta Street — is the old town of narrow yards and cobbles, ending at the 199 steps up to St Mary's church. The west side, built in the 1840s as a spa resort, holds the Royal Crescent and the beach. Expect to cross the bridge ten times a day.
These hotels sit in several different parts of that map. Jet Black Jewel is on Skinner Street, La Rosa Hotel on East Terrace and Sanders Yard on Church Street, all in the old town and its edges. The Europa on Hudson Street, Saxonville Hotel on Ladysmith Avenue and Bagdale Hall on Bagdale are west-side addresses, closer to the station and the beach. Others sit outside the town centre: The Inn On The Moor Hotel at Mill Green Way, The Mallyan Spout Hotel at Goathland, The Eskdale Inn at Castleton, Horseshoe Hotel at Egton Bridge, The Station Tavern at Grosmont and The Fox and Hounds on Brook Lane. Couples and short-break visitors are best served by the old-town addresses; families and anyone driving should look at the hotels with free car parking and family rooms.

Getting there and around
There is no fast train to Whitby. The Esk Valley line runs to Middlesbrough in about 90 minutes with roughly four services a day, connecting for Darlington and the East Coast Main Line, and the route from York via Middlesbrough takes around three hours in total with only a handful of connections. By road from York allow 1h15 via Malton and Pickering on the A169 over the moors, with the Hole of Horcum viewpoint on the way. The X93 bus links Scarborough in 1 hour and Middlesbrough. Teesside Airport is 75 minutes by car, Leeds Bradford about 2h. In town everything is walkable but steep and cobbled; the West Cliff lift saves the beach climb in season.
When to go
Avoid the two Goth Weekends, one around the last weekend of April and one at the end of October near Halloween — they are the busiest weekends of Whitby's calendar and accommodation across the whole town sells out six to twelve months ahead. If you are not attending, go at another time. Summer brings the crowds and the seasonal Park & Ride on Stainsacre Lane, while spring and autumn give you the abbey and the clifftop without the crush.
