Autumn Eating for Two in Ripon and Whitby: Pubs, Tasting Menus and Harbour Cafes 2 The Square, Grassington: Honest Verdict for Solo Young Travellers

A practical couples' guide to North Yorkshire's two most different food towns, from Ripon's market-square gastropubs to Whitby's harbour-side shellfish.

Ripon: Small City, Serious Kitchens

Ripon rewards couples who plan around one square mile. The market place holds a Thursday market and a Wednesday produce stall, and the surrounding streets — Kirkgate, Westgate, Duck Hill — carry most of the good eating. Book a table at a gastropub on Kirkgate or near the cathedral for a two-course dinner in the £30–45 per head band with a shared bottle, and you are doing autumn properly. The cathedral itself, plus the Workhouse Museum and the 1,300-year-old crypt of St Wilfrid, give you a wet-weather morning before lunch.

For a slower afternoon, walk the canal towpath from Ripon Racecourse toward Littlethorpe — flat, quiet, 40 minutes each way — then retreat to a café on the square for Yorkshire tea and a fat rascal. Ripon suits couples who want a short walk, a long lunch and an early night. It is 25 minutes by car from Harrogate, 45 from York, and the nearest mainline station is Harrogate, so a car is genuinely useful here. Stay in the city centre if you want to drink and walk home.

Whitby: Smoke, Shellfish and Sea Air

Whitby is a different animal. The good eating clusters on Church Street and along the harbour's west side, with the best-known fish restaurants on Bridge Street and Sandgate. Expect fish and chips at £14–20, a dressed crab plate nearer £18–24, and a harbour-view table that needs booking two to three weeks ahead for a Friday or Saturday in October. The Magpie and the Quayside spots are the obvious names; the smaller cafés up Church Street toward the abbey steps are where locals actually eat lunch.

Autumn is the right season for two reasons: the herring season runs into late September, and the crowds thin from mid-October. Climb the 199 steps to the abbey for the view back over the harbour mouth, then come down for a kipper or a smoked haddock chowder. Whitby is on the Esk Valley line from Middlesbrough and trains from York change at Middlesbrough or run direct via the coast; driving from York takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Book a hotel with parking near the station or West Cliff rather than the old town, where streets are narrow and permits are scarce.

Choosing Between Them, and Where to Sleep

If you have three nights, give Ripon one and Whitby two. Ripon is the better base for a cathedral-and-canals day with a tasting-menu dinner that runs to 7 courses; Whitby is the better base for seafood, sea views and a bracing walk to Sandsend along the beach — roughly 3 miles, an hour at a stroll. If you have only two nights in autumn, book Whitby. It clears out after the October half-term, hotel rates fall noticeably outside school holidays, and the harbour still has enough open kitchens until late November.

Couples booking late often find Ripon cheaper midweek and Whitby cheaper Sunday to Thursday. Aim for a room with a bath if you are doing the coastal walk, and check whether breakfast is included — in Whitby it usually saves £20–25 for two. If your dates fall in the last week of October, the Whitby Goth Weekend fills accommodation months ahead; book by early September or shift to the following week. For a quieter anniversary trip, late September in Ripon and early October in Whitby is the sweet spot.

What to Skip

Skip the harbour-front restaurants with laminated photo menus and a greeter at the door; the menus are longer and the kitchens are busier than the food deserves. Skip a sit-down lunch in Whitby on a Saturday in August unless you have booked — you will queue 40 minutes for a table you could have reserved. In Ripon, skip the chain coffee shops on the square and use the independent cafés on Kirkgate instead. And skip trying to do both towns in one day: the drive via the A169 over the moors is beautiful but 1 hour 40 minutes each way, which leaves no time to eat.

Booking Your Stay

Book accommodation directly through the partner site so you can compare Ripon city-centre hotels with Whitby harbour and West Cliff options in one search. Use the map view for Whitby — parking and the abbey steps matter more than star rating. For Ripon, filter for properties within a 10-minute walk of the market square. If you are travelling by train, prioritise Whitby near the station and treat Ripon as a day trip by bus or taxi from Harrogate.

Weather and Timing

Expect 8–14°C in October, wetter and windier on the coast than inland. Pack a waterproof for the abbey steps and the Cleveland Way, and book an indoor table as a fallback for any coastal walk. Sunset drops from around 6.45pm in early October to 4.30pm by early November, so plan the harbour walk before lunch and the abbey climb after. Museums in Ripon close around 4pm out of season.

Getting Around Without a Car

The 128 and 128A buses link Ripon with Harrogate and York; Whitby is served by the Esk Valley line and the X93/X94 along the coast to Scarborough. A couple without a car can do Ripon as a day trip and base themselves in Whitby for three nights, using the bus for Sandsend and Robin Hood's Bay. Taxis in Whitby are short-hop and cheap between West Cliff and the harbour; in Ripon, everything is walkable.

Before you book

The questions people ask about Grassington, answered with this month’s numbers.

How far ahead should we book a Whitby restaurant in autumn?

Two to three weeks for a Friday or Saturday in October, and by early September if your dates fall in the last week of October when Goth Weekend fills the town. Midweek in November you can often book two or three days ahead.

Is Ripon or Whitby better for a couples' food weekend?

Whitby, if you have two nights and want seafood and sea air. Ripon suits a single night with a longer tasting-menu dinner and a cathedral-and-canal day. With three nights, do one in Ripon and two in Whitby.

Do we need a car for eating well in both towns?

Not strictly. Trains and the 128 and X93 buses cover both, but a car gives you Sandsend, the moors and the A169 crossing. Without one, base in Whitby and treat Ripon as a day trip from Harrogate.
