4- and 5-star hotels in Portrush

Portrush is a seaside town on the Causeway Coast, built around two sandy beaches, the East Strand and the West Strand, with a harbour and a compact centre full of restaurants and bars. The town centre puts you within walking distance of both strands and the main concentration of places to eat and drink, and many hotels here are traditional seafront properties. The East Strand is backed by dunes and the Royal Portrush Golf Club and suits walkers and surfers, while the West Strand is quieter, with views towards the Skerries and the Bann Estuary.

These hotels sit in and around the town centre and the strands: several addresses are on Main Street, Eglington Street, Eglinton Street and Causeway Street, a short distance from the centre, while others lie further out on Coleraine Road, Dunluce Road, Ballymacrea Road and the Hopefield estates. That mix suits couples on a short break who want the seafront and bars on foot, families who need space, kitchens and family rooms, and golfers or drivers using the town as a base for the wider Causeway Coast.

Getting there and around

Portrush is served by Northern Ireland Railways, with direct trains from Belfast (approximately two hours) and Londonderry (approximately one hour); the railway station is in the town centre. By road, the town is about an hour's drive from Belfast via the M2 and A26, and about 40 minutes from Londonderry. Bus services connect Portrush with nearby towns such as Coleraine and Bushmills. Once in Portrush, most of the town centre and seafront are walkable, and local buses serve the wider area. For exploring the Causeway Coast, a car is useful, though there are seasonal bus services to the Giant's Causeway and other attractions.

When to go

The most popular time to visit Portrush is during the summer months (June to August), when the weather is mildest and the town's seasonal attractions and amusements are open; July and August can be busy, especially during school holidays. Spring and autumn offer quieter conditions and are suitable for walking and golf, though some facilities may have reduced hours. Winter is quiet, with a mild but often wet and windy climate, and some hotels and restaurants may close or operate limited hours.
