Derry is reached by air, road and rail. City of Derry Airport lies about 7 miles northeast of the city and has flights from several UK destinations. The train station in the Waterside is served by Northern Ireland Railways, with connections to Belfast and beyond; from Belfast the train takes about two hours, and buses also run regularly. By road the city is linked to Belfast and Dublin via the M2 and A5, with bus services from both, and the car journey from Belfast takes around one and a half hours via the M2 and A6. In the centre, getting around is easy on foot, and local buses serve the wider area, with taxis available.
When to go
The best time to visit Derry is summer, from June to August, when the weather is mild and the days are long. This is when many festivals and events take place, including the Foyle Maritime Festival and the Derry Halloween celebrations. Spring and autumn are quieter but still pleasant, while winter can be cold and wet, though the city's attractions remain open.
