Home/Where to stay/Grassington/3-star hotels
3-star hotels in Grassington
A shortlist of the 3-star hotels we cover in and around Grassington, the cobbled Wharfedale village used as Darrowby on screen. It is for couples, families, walkers and short-break visitors who want a Dales base with pubs, food and footpaths on the doorstep.
Staying in Grassington
Grassington is the prettiest square in Wharfedale and a National Park centre: a cobbled square barely bigger than a tennis court, stone cottages with heavy lintels, a steep Main Street of independent shops, and the Wharfe in the trees below. The Channel 5 remake of All Creatures Great and Small dressed the square as Darrowby, so summer Saturdays bring photographers to the shopfronts. Evenings here are better than in most Dales villages, with pubs serving food into the evening and kitchens generally closing around 8.30pm. Two festivals dominate: the Grassington Festival across a fortnight in June, and the Dickensian Festival on December Saturdays.
The hotels on this list sit in the village itself and in the hamlets along Wharfedale. The Devonshire Grassington is on Main Street, The Old Hall Inn and The Shippon are at Threshfield and Hill Top Fold, The Fountaine Inn is in Linton, The Black Horse Hotel Grassington is off Garrs Lane, and the Red Lion Hotel and Manor House, Skirfare Barn and Tennant Arms Hotel are upstream at Burnsall, Kettlewell and Kilnsey. Couples get pub rooms and fires; families get family rooms and cottages; walkers get Linton Falls, Grass Wood and the Dales Way from the door.

Free and open at all hours. Continue five minutes to Linton village green and the Fountaine Inn, one of the best-set pubs in the dale.

Four miles north on the B6160, Kilnsey Crag overhangs the road by some forty feet and is a landmark climbing wall. Continue to Kettlewell for the Racehorses and Blue Bell pubs, then on to Buckden if you have time. Twenty minutes' driving each way and the finest stretch of road in Wharfedale.
Our picks here: Tennant Arms Hotel
Burnsall
Three miles downstream on the riverside path from the Tin Bridge, following the Wharfe past Loup Scar into Burnsall's green with its five-arched bridge. Around ninety minutes each way, mostly flat, boots after rain. The Red Lion at Burnsall serves lunch, and the 72 bus can bring you back if your legs have gone.

Come for a spring midweek, a wet autumn week with a fire, or for December if you like crowds in bonnets. The Grassington Festival runs across a fortnight in June, and the Dickensian Festival fills December Saturdays, when the village goes gas-lit and costumed and the streets close to traffic. Both fill every bed for miles. Skip Grassington if you want quiet in August.
