Staying in Settle

Settle is the one Yorkshire Dales town with a proper train service, and that changes everything about staying here. The Settle-Carlisle line begins at the 1876 Midland station on Station Road, and from the platform you can be at Ribblehead Viaduct in about 25 minutes or Horton-in-Ribblesdale, at the foot of Pen-y-ghent, in fifteen. The town is packed tight under Castleberg, a limestone crag that leans straight over the rooftops, with the Shambles, Ye Olde Naked Man café and Tuesday market in the square. By nine in the evening there are two or three busy pubs and a lot of dark streets, and the good coffee shops shut by four.

These 5-star addresses spread well beyond the town itself, out into the villages and hamlets of Craven: The Traddock and Ribblesdale Pods and Three Peaks House in Settle, Carrholme Cottage and Pendle View Apartment in Giggleswick, Littlebank Country House at Rathmell, Town Head Farm at Malham, Orcaber Farm Retreat at Austwick, Bridge End Cottage at Stainforth, The Engine Room at Kirkby Malham, Graydon Cottage at Wigglesworth and Limecroft at Malham. That suits walkers and couples who want a base for Malham, Ingleborough and the viaduct, and families who need space and a kitchen; it suits railway travellers who don't mind a taxi from the station, and anyone who wants the Dales dark and quiet by bedtime.

How to choose

For couples

The Traddock puts a restaurant and bar under the same roof as your room, so dinner is a short walk, not a drive. Littlebank Country House adds a garden, a terrace and a pool bar at Rathmell. Carrholme Cottage at Giggleswick has a fireplace and a jacuzzi for two, with free parking at the door.

For families

Plan your stay

Getting there and around

Settle is the one Yorkshire Dales town with a proper train service. The Settle-Carlisle line begins at the 1876 Midland station on Station Road; Ribblehead Viaduct is about 25 minutes up the line, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, at the foot of Pen-y-ghent, fifteen, and Leeds a little over an hour. That makes a car-free Dales holiday genuinely possible here in a way it is not from Leyburn or Grassington. Arriving by train, note that most of these addresses are in villages beyond the town — Giggleswick, Rathmell, Austwick, Stainforth, Malham, Kirkby Malham — so plan the last stretch accordingly; every one of them lists free car parking.

When to go

Rain is the local speciality: this is the wet side of the Pennines and it shows, so bring boots whatever the season. Victoria Cave and the museum on Victoria Street open most afternoons April to October, with fewer days in winter. Tuesday is market day in the square. Pen-y-ghent and the Three Peaks are year-round walking, but the path to Castleberg is slippery in the wet, and Horton's café is the traditional clocking-in point.
