4-star hotels in Scarborough
A shortlist of 4-star hotels in Scarborough, pulled together from guest ratings, facilities and location. It is for couples, families and cyclists weighing up the seaside arcades against the cliff-top calm, and for anyone who wants a 4-star base on the Yorkshire coast.
Staying in Scarborough
Scarborough is honest about being a resort. Sandside and Foreshore Road are amusement arcades, doughnut stalls and gulls that will take food out of your hand, and in August it is loud from ten in the morning. Alongside that sit the Stephen Joseph Theatre, where Alan Ayckbourn has premiered most of his plays, the Rotunda geology museum built in 1829, and Anne Brontë's grave in St Mary's churchyard on the castle road. Both versions of the town are real, and you can have whichever you prefer by choosing which bay you sleep on.
These hotels sit in both camps. Queens Parade and North Marine Road look out over the North Bay, which is five minutes from the sands and has the boating lake; Blenheim Terrace, Longwestgate and Palace Hill are on the South Bay side, closer to the harbour and the castle headland. Several are inland in Ryndleside, Weydale Avenue and Scalby, and three sit outside town entirely, at Barmoor Lane, Racecourse Road, Wykeham and Low Road in the North York Moors National Park. Couples tend to take the sea-view terraces, families the rooms with cots and adjoining doors, and cyclists the cliff-bridge base with bike rental.

When to go
August is the loudest month: from ten in the morning Sandside and Foreshore Road are in full arcade voice. The boating lake's model naval warfare display runs on selected summer afternoons, with a brass band on Sundays, while the rest of the year the lake is free and quieter. Spring and autumn suit the theatre, the Rotunda museum and the churchyard walk up Castle Road, and the coast bus to Whitby and Filey runs through the day either side of summer.
