Hotels near Old Mulgrave Castle

Old Mulgrave Castle is the ruined castle that gives the hamlet of Mulgrave its name, standing above the wooded Lythe valley a short way inland from the coast between Whitby and Sandsend. The castle is the historic core of the wider Mulgrave estate, which has been held by the same family for centuries and later gained its better-known cliff-top house, Mulgrave Castle, a mile or so to the north. Visitors come for the medieval earthworks, the fragments of masonry and the deep silence of the surrounding woods, and because the ruins are close enough to the Yorkshire coast to combine with a beach walk in the same afternoon. The appeal is quiet rather than commercial. There is no visitor centre, no shop and no queue: the ruins sit in woodland on a private estate, reached on foot along public paths, and the reward is a roofless shell, grassy banks and long views over the valley rather than a restored showpiece. It is the kind of place people seek out after they have done the abbey and the harbour in Whitby and want a half-day that feels genuinely old and genuinely empty. Walkers, photographers and anyone staying in the cottages and country houses around Lythe and Sandsend treat it as their local monument.
