About Redcar

Redcar is known for its racecourse, one of the oldest in Britain, and for the Redcar Beacon, a vertical pier on the sea front that opened in 2013. The Teesworks site to the north-west was once the site of the Redcar steelworks, and the town's industrial heritage is still visible along the coast. The beach is a popular spot for walks, and the Transporter Bridge at Middlesbrough is a nearby landmark.

The town has a mix of independent shops, cafes and larger retailers, and the sea front hosts events throughout the year. Redcar is a working town with a strong sense of community, and its location on the North Sea gives it a bracing, open feel.

Redcar Town Centre. Convenient for the railway station, high street shops and the sea front, with many of the town's hotels and guest houses.

Coatham. The area at the north-west end of the sea front, close to the racecourse and with views along the coast.

Getting there and around

The town is also served by buses from Middlesbrough, Eston and other parts of the borough. By road, the A1085 and A174 connect Redcar to the A19 and the wider region. When to go

Summer is the most popular time to visit Redcar, when the beach and sea front are at their best and the racecourse holds fixtures. Spring and autumn can be quieter, with mild weather suitable for coastal walks. Winter brings colder, windier conditions, but the town's indoor attractions and events continue. The Redcar Literary Festival and other events take place at various times of year, so it is worth checking local listings before you travel.
