About York Minster

York Minster is the largest medieval gothic cathedral in northern Europe and the seat of the Archbishop of York. Building began around 1220 and the cathedral was consecrated in 1472, 250 years that run from Early English through Decorated to Perpendicular gothic, visible in the transepts, nave, chapter house, choir and towers. Beneath it lie the remains of the Roman fortress basilica of Eboracum, where Constantine was proclaimed emperor in 306. People come for the glass as much as the stone. The Minster holds roughly half of all the surviving medieval stained glass in England, among it the Great East Window, glazed by John Thornton between 1405 and 1408 and the largest single expanse of medieval glass anywhere in the world. A visit divides into the nave, the north transept with the Five Sisters Window, the octagonal chapter house, and the Undercroft museum of Roman and Norman foundations, the Horn of Ulf and the story of the 1984 fire. Above it all, 275 steps climb the Central Tower to a roof-level view over the city.

Tips for staying near York Minster

  • The Minster is a working cathedral as well as an attraction, so services and events can change what is open when. Check the day's pattern before you set out, and treat the Undercroft and chapter house as separate parts of the visit.
  • The Central Tower is 275 steps up. Go early if you want the roof-level view with fewer people around you, and leave it for another day if you are short of time for the nave, transepts and glass.
  • Parking is not something every hotel close to the Minster offers. If you are driving, the named places with free car parking in this list include Minster's Keep Stylish Apartment Near York Minster, Trembling Madness Apartments, Chez Mannion, Gillygate Nest with Free Allocated Parking and Stonegate Court.
  • The quietest great thing in the building is the Five Sisters Window in the north transept, five lancets of thirteenth-century grisaille glass each 16 metres tall. Build in five slow minutes for the chapter house stalls too, carved with grotesque heads.
  • The Great East Window is the largest single expanse of medieval glass anywhere in the world. If stained glass is the reason for your visit, give it real time rather than passing through, and see the West Window's heart-shaped tracery on the way out.
