Middleham Castle is the Neville stronghold where Richard III spent his boyhood, and its great keep, raised in the 1170s by Robert FitzRanulph, is one of the largest Norman keeps in England. The castle stands over a village that still trains racehorses on the moor above. You enter through the gatehouse into the inner court, where the keep stands roofless but complete in outline, its walls climbing three storeys. Modern stairs and viewing platforms let you reach the great hall level and look down into the chamber and the well, and out over the curtain wall to the village roofs and the moor. Around the court are the remains of the chapel, the kitchens and the ranges added by the Nevilles, all legible at foundation level. It is a compact site and the keep dominates it. Everything is outdoors; there is no museum and no cafe on site, and interpretation panels handle the Richard III story carefully rather than romantically.
