Carrmire Gate is a historic monument in Malton, a small market town that eats above its weight, on the York-Scarborough line, ten minutes from Castle Howard. Malton spent a century as a quiet agricultural town on the Derwent and then, from about 2010, deliberately turned itself into Yorkshire's food town. Visitors come to see the gate and to explore the town's food scene: Talbot Yard off Yorkersgate has a pasta maker, a bakery, a coffee roastery, a gelato counter and a charcuterie business in converted stable blocks. The monthly food market on the second Saturday fills Market Place, and the Food Lovers Festival over the late May bank holiday puts 30,000 people in a town of 5,000. Malton is also a proper working town, with Wheelgate and Yorkersgate butchers and a fishmonger, the Milton Rooms for gigs and comedy, and Norton-on-Derwent across the bridge, one of Britain's biggest racehorse training centres. Strings of horses cross the roads around Langton Road early in the morning. The railway makes Malton a practical base: trains on the York to Scarborough line run roughly hourly, 25 minutes to York, 25 to Scarborough, about an hour to Leeds. Castle Howard is six miles west, Eden Camp a mile north, Flamingo Land six miles, Pickering twenty minutes by Coastliner.
