Whitby Without a Car: Rail, Ghost Walks and Where to Sleep
2 The Square, Grassington: Honest Verdict for Solo Young Travellers
Whitby is one of the easiest ghost-story towns in England to reach by train, and the railway itself is half the atmosphere.
What to Skip, and How to Book
Skip the car entirely. Parking on West Cliff is charged and tight in season, and the town's one-way system is a misery. Skip the beach on a windy February day and the abbey's visitor centre if you are short of time — the ruins and the church next door carry the atmosphere. Skip any accommodation promising sea views from the old town; the abbey blocks much of it. Ask for a front-facing West Cliff room instead, and confirm the view in writing before you pay.
Book through IMPT North Yorkshire and put the £5 free credit towards a carbon project rather than a hotel discount. Search West Cliff first, then the old town if you want character over comfort. Two nights is the right length: one for the abbey and coast, one for the evening walks and a slow breakfast.
